When I first purchased his book, twenty years ago, it was difficult to find, but it is now readily available in reprint. Russell Sturgis was an important figure in Gilded Age art and architecture. He was trained as an architect and practiced for a number of years before retiring early and then, devoting his life to the promotion of the arts. He was one of the founders and a long serving trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After living abroad and touring all of the galleries of the continent, he devoted himself to organizations that promoted the arts back home and wrote extensively on art and architecture. The Appreciation of Pictures is a series of essays devoted to the description of the different periods of art, the artistic epochs, concluding with the late 19th century movements. This is a learned and erudite book, written with great clarity, one that provides insights into the way that an educated and enlightened man looked at both the paintings of the path as well as the more contemporary movements. It will be valuable to the art historian as well to a general reader with an interest in art.Product details
